What to Drink This Weekend - 02/03/17 - Poesia Rose, Sicily

Colorful birds are returning to our gardens and colorful roses are returning to our wine stores.

This weekend pull the cork on the delicious Poesia Rosato, Cantina Valenti, available at $22 a bottle.

Poesia is from the island of Sicily, located off the toe of Italy.  The color is a beautiful tawny salmon, quite distinctive when compared to rose from Provence.  The distinctive color comes from the dark skinned Nerello Mascalese grape variety. Nerello Mascalese is grown in vineyards located on the north-eastern side of Mount Etna. The mineral rich volcanic soil and the vineyards high elevation gives fruit a concentrated flavour with wonderful minerality.   On the nose look for the delicious hint of wood smoke hidden in the depths of wild ripe strawberry and squeeze of lime.

Dry in style with a 13.5% alcohol, the wild ripe strawberry and citrus continues to the palate.  The wine has a luscious, silky mouth feel and weight, acidity is present but not pronounced. On the finish we welcome back the round smoke character that delighted us on the nose.

Poesia Rosato may be a pretty colour, but this volcano wine is no wallflower and will accompany a variety of foods well. When the warm weather arrives Poesia will partner food from the grill... I’d better stock up as this will fly out of stores fast!
